The John Burnett Personal Services team of brokers is responsible for the face-to-face interaction with our clients. They are responsible for finding solutions and answers to clients insurance needs and questions, making sure you are adequately covered. We are always there when you need us!

We understand that the traditional claims process can often be laborious and time consuming. With this in mind we are constantly reviewing our own processes to make the claims experience as simple and painless as possible. The circumstances of every claim are unique which is why we strongly believe in direct personal contact at the outset of a claim eliminating frustration and unnecessary paperwork down the line.
I am currently responsible for giving our clients personal service and ensuring that our clients are properly and adequately insured. I am passionate about client service and enjoy dealing with people. I am proud to be part of the John Burnett team and together, we make sure that we give our clients the best possible service.
I love spending time with my family and enjoy all form of exercise including gym, running and cycling.
I have been in the short term insurance industry for 8+ years and as a broker I enjoy meeting, building relationships and creating friendships with people from all different aspects of the business world, who I refer to as my clients.

In 2003, I sold my business to John Burnett Insurance Brokers on what was a one year arrangement but things worked out so well, I’m still here!
I have two daughters & six grandchildren who keep me busy when I’m not playing golf!
I was with Price Forbes for 32 years with 11 years on the Main Board, leaving to start my own brokering business in 1994. I have 51 years experience in short term insurance brokering and have always followed a philosophy that “clients needs come first,” with the focus on professional advice and service.
I have an ACII (UK) Chartered Insurance Broker as well as the RE1 and Keyman requirements.
My interest are most sports but particularly golf, vintage cars and my family.
Having worked for insurance companies prior to being in brokering, I bring a different perspective to John Burnett. I am passionate about making sure our clients are adequately covered and that we deal only with Insurers who share our same values.
My hobbies are fly fishing, DIY, cycling and spending time with my family.
I started my journey in the insurance industry as a claims clerk with Pooley Thorne & Associates. Working for a family business meant that I had the advantage of having my old man as both my boss and mentor. Under his wing, I grew not only as an insurance broker but as a man. When my dad passed away I was looking for a new “home and family” where I could continue providing fair and honest advise and services to my clients, some of which I have had for more than 15 years. My old man always taught me to have the right tool for the right job. Throughout the years I have been trying to find these tools and have ultimately found them at John Burnett.
Collectively, we have hundreds of years of knowledge and our sound relationships with all of the major insurers enables us to provide tailor made products and services to suit everyone.
I really enjoy anything to do with the outdoors, fishing and DIY projects but ultimately, I’m a family man and my wife, daughter, son and my animals mean the world to me.
I have been in the insurance business for over 40 years. Eight years with Old Mutual, 25 years in my own brokerage and now with John Burnett since 2002, after merging my brokerage with John Burnett.
Over the years I have built up a great rapport with my clients and enjoy interacting with people.
I enjoy playing golf, fishing, a bit of cooking and most importantly spending time with family and friends.
I have been with John Burnett since 2002, starting off in the underwriting department and moving into brokering for both personal and commercial lines.
I have obtained all the necessary points and passed all the required exams as regulated by the FSB. I enjoy dealing with people and thrive on interacting with my clients on a face-to-face basis and personally attending to their needs.
My interests include golf, reading and listening to music.
JJ van der Merwe
I have been in insurance since 1971. The last 40 years I spent as a broker handling a range of portfolios including some large commercial portfolios in the mining and industrial sectors.
I joined John Burnett in January of 2013 when we sold our business to them.
My interests are the outdoors, wildlife and I am an avid supporter of Bachus, the god of wine.
I have been involved in short term insurance for 48 years – a life time! I first learnt my trade with insurers and then the broker market. I spent 14 years with Price Forbes Africa (now Alexander Forbes), but decided to form my own brokering company in 1988. John Thorne & Associates later became Pooley Thorne & Associates with partner Terrence Pooley. We merged with John Burnett Insurance Brokers in 2013. I have a degree in the university of life and have a passion for honesty and service.
I’ve been an insurance broker since 1964 so far. I am interested in biblical studies and have always played sport (provincial tennis for southern transvaal). I have also won numerous events for clay pigeon shooting.
I have been married to Gill for 39 years and we are blessed to have three daughters, four grand-daughters and two grandsons.
My motto in life is there are no problems, only solutions.You cannot repair your own life by destroying anothers.
